One of the more popular lines in the Iquitos Mixed Calabacillo series originally from the Marañon River basin in the Peruvian Amazon, sighted on an island in the Rio Amazon in front of the city of Iquitos, then taken to Trinidad on successive trips between 1930-34 to form the foundation of the Cocoa Research Unit’s cacáo collection. Exhibits the shape, size, & smoothness of a little calabash (hence, ‘calabacillo’). Very unbecoming in appearance, semi-acidic pulp but often with seed counts of enormous magnitude (averaging 70+), so much so it’s used in breeding programs worldwide for various hybrids.
