Impact
All things are difficult before they become easy – Persian poet Saadi (1184-1291)
In the battle of soul-merchants vs. soul-tenders, one sells ya down the river to get chewed up by the pirañas while the other feeds your power base for growth & development. The Mast Bros are caught in the middle of this dynamic, hindered early on by sourcing & logistics, but you just know which way they’re headed as they work the kinks out upstream, striving to deliver the nutrients.

Appearance 2.9 / 5
Color: | opaque purple/grey |
Surface: | Bloomsbury... this butter-bandit has been sitting on the shelf too long in some B’lyn apt w/o A/C |
Temper: | extra matte |
Snap: | splitting rocks breaks the ear drums; clean straight-edge though |
Aroma 8.1 / 10
reeking & shreiking a bad Cabernet of cinnamon-frosted yucca ‘n banana cornflakes -> jasmine radials hovering above; aerates to beautiful honeydew
Mouthfeel 8.6 / 15
Texture: | you can hear the texture in the Snap: hard dry fragments |
Melt: | epoxy |
Flavor 43.4 / 50
racks the spices & breaks ‘em up all over chocolate – cinnamon, vanilla, cardamom, mace, black pepper, & allspice -> lone blackberry flashes up then immediately backs down -> hollows & flattens out -> red-banana cream takes over the length, losing stamina against a restrained (even muffled) bitter rear that appears to signal the end
Quality 15.3 / 20
Good heft for a semisweet. Where Mast’s techniques to streamline flavor works well with another of its single-origin bars (DR), here it robs the profile to ill-FX, confined to a narrow spectrum once it clears that sensational opening passage (enough spices to wonder whether they were added), dangerously flattening the contour, leaving behind good baseline CQ (Chocolate Quotient) but limiting the range in a quick evolution; the house-style leveling an already compromised clone – the ever-ubiquitous CCN-51 – further aggravated by dreadlock texture.
A rookie mistake.
