Dick Taylor operates out of Arcata, Cailifornia... Humbodlt County... agricultural hotbed... of a very particular sort.

This Black Fig Chocolate ain't no cheesy Humboldt Fog.

It's a joint of blunt-force, seedy unlike sensi, with some wayward meth twins (for methylxanthines) that are higher than the CBD-to-THC ratio of some outdoor organics where the new Kingdom of Kush meets Califia, that mythical black Amazon who lent her name to the land she once ruled -- California... in a presage of contemporary America?

Califia
(in The Room of the Dons, Mark Hopkins Hotel, San Francisco, CA;
by Maynard Dixon & Frank Von Sloun, 1926)
Appearance   4.7 / 5

Color: close to its namesake
Surface: captivating filigreed front; stud back
Temper: neutral
Snap: percussive despite the sticky figs
Aroma   7.2 / 10
neither of those original Ecuador hallmarks (cocoa nor florals found in true Nacional) but an odd sodium crystal cuts thru a tobacco haze -> oxidizes to a nice melon
Mouthfeel   9.8 / 15
Texture: tough gum turns to stick-'em as fig fragments swell around some phat cocoa butter
Melt: fast
Flavor   35.4 / 50
strong black mission tar -> grousing cardboard & chalk (janky chocolate poorly dried, stored & processed) chokes off the sweeter pipings of the figs -> clouds of green tobacco vanish in the smog of Ecuadorian cacáo
Quality   11.2 / 20
Many cacáos inhere with natural fig analogues (Bonnat's Haiti perhaps the prime exemplar). No surprise then that adding actual figs to the mix would buttress a chocolate bar.

But black mission figs on Ecuador chocolate? Indelicate as any tar pit. With a brick shit house structure to wall it up.

Where Theo's Fig Fennel underwhelms, this just goes in the opposite direction. Dick Taylor needs to dial it back some & ease off the figs. Then again that would expose a prone Ecuadorian chocolate rife with defects.

INGREDIENTS: cocoa mass, sugar, black fig
