FLAVOR PROFILE: Twang (sometimes Fruits & Flowers depending on processing) + Earthen; often pronounced olive notes; tropical fruits, spices (nutmeg / cinnamon), wood & even peat
CHARACTERISTICS: stout & intense with sharp acidic volatiles; good length
Named after the Matina river valley in Costa Rica where it continues to grow close to its original form; likely offshoot of the Creole from Martinique (hence the name additionally for the place from where it came) which in turn is a descendent of an Amazon (traditional cultivars of Matina exhibit the Amelonado phenotype & belong to the Amelonado genetic group). Although some variation in phenotype exists within the Matina family, its genotype is considered largely homozygous.
